The mowing deck on your Yardman mower may require removal for several reasons, such as mowing deck belt replacement, service, cutting blade sharpening or replacement, or just for general cleaning. You may have purchased your Yardman lawn tractor without a mowing deck; and are planning on installing a new deck. A Yardman mowing deck can be installed in just a little time with minimal basic hand-tools.

Park the lawn tractor on a flat, level surface to allow enough clearance between the ground and tractor frame to move the mowing deck in place. Set the parking brake and move the transmission shift lever into the 'N' or neutral position.

Pull the power takeoff (PTO) mowing deck blade engagement lever fully downward to the 'off' position. The 'PTO' lever is located on the inner right rear fender closest to the operator's seat.Turn the lawn tractor ignition switch off and remove the key from the ignition switch. Disconnect the engine spark plug wire from the engine spark plug. All of these steps ensure that the mower can't possibly start while you work on the deck.

Lift the mower deck lift linkages to the highest position. Pull the deck lift lever fully backwards, then to the right to lock the mowing deck lift lever into position. The mowing deck lift lever is located on the outside right rear fender.

Unscrew the self-tapping engine pulley belt keeper retainer screw from the engine pulley belt guide with a socket wrench. Slide the engine pulley belt keeper from the designated tractor frame hole. Mark the frame next to the engine pulley belt keeper hole with a marker to use a reference when installing the engine pulley belt keeper.

Slide the mowing deck under the left side tractor frame, centering the mowing deck perpendicularly to the front tractor frame. Turn the wheels all the way to the right if you have trouble fitting the deck in place. Slide the PTO cable housing into the rear mowing deck idler bracket. Slide the PTO hairpin cable hairpin clip onto the PTO cable housing end, securing the cable to the idler bracket.

Slide the mowing deck front hanging rod through the tractor front hanging rod bracket between the tractor front tires. Push the L-shaped end of the front hanger rod through the mowing deck front hanger bracket welded to the top front mowing deck. Push the front hanger rod hairpin clip through the hole in the front hanger rod by hand to secure the front hanger rod to the front mowing deck. This is applicable only to 42- and 48-inch decks.

Slide the mowing deck toward the front of the tractor for 38-inch deck models. Lift the mowing deck while aligning the mowing deck hanger hooks with the front deck stabilizer rod. Lower the front mowing deck hooks onto the front mowing deck stabilizer rod to secure the front mowing deck to the tractor frame.

Lower the cutting deck lift lever to the lowest position to connect the rear mowing deck lift arms to the rear mowing deck support pins. Locate the left and right rear mowing deck support pins on 42-, 46- and 48-inch mowing deck models. Align the left rear mowing deck lift arm with the left rear mowing deck support bracket pin. Rotate the spring-loaded pin, releasing the pin through the mowing deck lift arm. Repeat this process for the right side rear mowing deck.

Lift the left rear mowing deck slightly on 38-inch mowing deck models. Slide the rear mowing deck support rod through the rear deck lift arm. Slide the rear mowing deck support rod hairpin through the hole in the end of the support rod by hand to secure the rear mowing deck to the rear deck lift arm. Repeat this process on the right side rear mowing deck.

Guide the mowing deck drive belt around the engine pulley. Fit the mowing deck drive belt V-shaped side fully into the engine pulley groove. Push the end of the engine pulley belt keeper through the marked tractor frame hole. Finish tightening the engine pulley belt keeper retaining screw with a socket wrench.

Connect the spark plug wire to the spark plug, ensuring that the rubber spark plug boot is pushed down firmly. Drive the lawn tractor around, testing the mower deck under loaded and unloaded conditions.

Tip

• Take note of the location of each part while removing the mower deck, making diagrams if necessary to make it easier to install the deck.

Warning

• Mower deck blades are razor sharp and can cause serious injury if your hand slips while working with the deck. Wear a pair of this gloves at all times when your hands will be near the blades.
